A work of utility might also be a work of art, if we cared to make it so. —William Morris, 1893
A piece of thoughtfully conceived furniture will be enjoyed for generations. It should be elegant and enduring in both design and craftsmanship. Each piece of furniture that is produced in my shop is carefully made by hand one piece at a time, using only the most select materials, prime hardwoods and veneers.
Cherry and Figured Maple Side Cases
A contemporary take on a traditional side case. These pieces were originally designed as companion pieces to an antique pencil post bed. They employ traditional proportions and materials while enjoying some subtle, contemporary detailing. The curved birdseye maple drawer fronts are accented with a fine walnut bead, all set in solid cherry casework. These cases are 29h x 23w x 15d. Dimensions can be adjusted to client specification.

Art Deco Dressing Screen

Mirrored glass and solid color lacquer.
Standing Cabinet in solid mahogany, pommele sapele and birdseye maple veneers, abalone details
This piece showcases exotic materials. The dense pommele sapele and curly/birdseye maple veneers are some of the most active I’ve ever come across. The interior of the case is set up, presumably, as a dry bar.Two half depth adjustable shelves and a shallow accessory drawer are found behind the subtly bowed doors.
The cabinet won “Best Studio Furniture” and “Best in Show” awards at the Vermont Woodworking Festival. It is currently available for $8,200. and is being shown by Vermont Artisans Gallery in Brattleboro, Vt.
Standing Cabinet Door Detail
Very active curly/birdseye maple veneered doors with abalone inset. Negative space between doors creates design motif.
Duncan Phyfe Walnut Dining Table
This is an interpretation of a traditional Duncan Phyfe dining table with a birdcage base. The solid walnut in this piece came from a lovely matched set of boards. A nicely figured walnut veneer was used in the apron and base for interest, providing a slight contrast.
Table is 66″ in diameter and extends to accept two 12″ leaves, seating ten.
Price for a similar table is $6,800.

Sculptural Chest of Drawers

Arts and Crafts style Garden Bench
The design for this bench draws on the work of early 20th century California architects Greene and Greene, widely considered to have produced some of the finest examples of American Arts and Crafts furniture. While not a reproduction piece, elements of the style are evident throughout.
Being an outdoor piece, the White Oak and Ipe used in the construction were chosen for durability as well as their beauty. More information about this piece can be found in “Projects and News”, on this site. I think it would work nicely in an entry hall or mudroom, as well as the garden…Dimensions 65″ x 21″ on this one, can be built to specification.

Modern Leather Upholstered Bench
Drawing on both Modern and Art Deco influences, this piece utilizes strong, simple shapes and clean line. Leather seat cushions are laid up on high density foam, adhered to laminated plywood panels. Dimensions are 80″ x 18″

Vermont Cherry and Curly Maple Dining Table
I love trestle tables. The design is elegant in it’s simplicity, easily adapts to almost any custom size and looks great dressed in various hardwoods or hardwood combinations. This particular table has a top made from Vermont cherry and base of curly maple, a handsome combination and one of my favorites
. A table of this design has seen daily use in my kitchen for almost thirty years and, given the use of traditional joinery and quality materials, I have little reason to doubt it has a long life in front of it! Dimensions 38″ x 82″ x 30″, very comfortably seats eight. Can be built to specification

High Post Mahogany Bed
A traditional looking high post bed, not for the purist! Everything about the detailing on this bed is a little unorthodox, including post configuration and carving in the headboard. Built with my friend, Peter Brough, our client loved it and ordered a second one, changing up the wood combinations! This one is solid mahogany and walnut, with some very nice figured mahogany in the headboard.
